Exams finally over on last sat! This sem exam is really a nitemare, and i sincerely hope my cap will not drop.......(I'll be very contented if i can get B average!) Having studied in the WORLD CLASS UNIVERSITY for 3.5 years already, somehow i feel that my diligence increased as every semester passes.....but not the results.......
Every sem, in order for us to be able to check our exam results via the internet, we are REQUIRED to do an ONLINE STUDENT FEEDBACK. In this feedback, students are required to rate the modules they are studying, and also comment on their lecturers. For the past 3.5 yrs, I've heard numerous rumors that these FEEDBACKS are not anonymous, and that the individual lecturers will know what the students said about them. Being a typical Singaporean----敢怒不敢言 type (angry but dun dare to voice out), because of the worries that the comments can directly affect what grades I'm going to get for the module......I believe there are also many such people in NUS----that provide the answers as to how much confidence the students have on the WORLD CLASS SYSTEM......and the WORLD CLASS UNIVERSITY.......I will be posting my honest feedbacks about my modules here......
CN4210 --- Membrane Science.
All chem eng majors are expected to take at least 4 technical electives in order to graduate from the WORLD CLASS UNIVERSITY, WORLD CLASS DEPARTMENT OF ChBe. Out of the 3 electives I've taken so far, this is the WORST module to take.....I have to give credit to the lecturer though, Prof Neal Chung. As compared to many professors of NUS ChBe, he can be considered quite a good lecturer. BUT, what really put me off is the terrible workload of the students.....the exam is a FULL MCQ paper. The exam covers his lecture notes (6 chapters), sounds acceptable right??? However, on top of that, the exam also covers some SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIALS, of which students have to read 20 journals, understand them and from the questions he set for my semester, he expect us to memorise them!!!
Sample question taken from the exam paper:
In Chung et al paper entitled "Development of asymmetric hollow fibers from polyimides for air separation", they indicated humidity may induce early precipation and increase the perfect of dense selective layer. In Clausi and Koros paper entitled "formation of defect free polyimide hollow fiber membranes for gas separation", they indicated humidity played no important role on their system. The differences between these 2 studies may arise from:(2 choices)
A)The former used a fluoro-polyimide, which has a much higher water sorption than the latter
B)The latter spun the fiber at a much higher speed
C)The spinning solution in the latter contains a volatile component
D)The former has a higher viscosity than the latter
E)The composition of spinning solution of the latter is closer to the phase inversion curve than the former
***he expects students to memorise all little details of the 20 papers we need to read!!!!!!!!
Conclusion: Take this module if your brain can store 200GB of data......If not, this will be a module of chance, probability and luck!!!!
CN4215 --- Food Technology
Obviously less tough than CN4210, but i really have to salute the 2 lecturers:
Mark Xu: who teaches in powerpoint slides with blue font and red background (try it out on your computer to experience how it feels)!!!! and I always like to quote his 'trademark statements"
"Do you want a bread????"--- what he wanted to say = "Do you want a break???"
"(talking to a student) Now it's bread time, and you can now eat your breast........" --- What he wanted to say = "Now it's break time, you can eat your bread"
Prof Uddin: I still find that he's a nice person lar, but, he is still so blurr!!!!!!! On Sept 2005, we need to make a compulsory visit to "Gardenia" Factory and we need to submit a 2 page write up about the visit....thanks to the previous batch of students who all decided to absent themselves when a similar trip was planned for them in the previous semester.......
Me, as usual, being the most suay person, received an email from him 1 day after the deadline of submission of the write up, saying that my report was not found, which indirectly was implying that I did not submit the write up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Luckily, my classmates were willing to vouch for me as they were sure that my write up was submitted together with theirs.........., and finally, he claimed that my write up was found........
Conclusion: In times of exams, or submission of any assignments, always make sure your script is being accounted for.......ask your friends to be your witness whenever you hand in any exam script.........remember my BH1001 incident???????????
CN4119 --- Design 1
Nothing much to comment about the module, as my tutor is really quite a nice teacher. Prof Karimi and Rangaiah are also quite good lar......but somehow, when they talk, I still have a tendency to fall asleep....=p....
The worst is Prof Feng SS. Attending his lecture makes me wanna fall asleep, listening to his webcast annoys me so much that I finished watching a 2 hr webcast lecture in 15 mins........Thanks to his poor articulation........Listening to him speak is really strenuous to the ears because most of the time, I will frown, mouth open big big and "huh"??? (cannot figure out wat kind of English he's talking), and then fall asleep because of frustration......To my juniors, beware of this guy and be mentally prepared for all these..........
LAB1201 --- Bahasa Indonesia 1
The only module i enjoyed studying this sem. probably because my tutors are really teachers and not "Professors". The truth is that most "Professors" can't teach, because the University employs them for their research capabilities, and not their teaching capability. Really hope that my results this sem can meet my expectations, so that nx sem I can take BI2 as a S/U module as i tink it's really useful to learn malay and it's a waste to stop at level 1. If not, I will have to source for 'easy scoring' modules to take to push up my cap............
Anyway, sem 7 is over and it's time to 跟往事干杯. Whatever it is, I'll juz let nature take its course and look forward to my FINAL SEMESTER IN THE WORLD CLASS UNIVERSITY!!!! Meanwhile, I'm thinking of taking part in a coming song writing competition....and hopefully, i will be able to submit something to take part! Also i will be busy with softball trainings to prepare for my ORD Softball trip to Chiang Mai!

Yes, we all know you like BI because of your TUTOR! ;)
Dun u like the module too???? =p
ibu agnes? hahaa...
hahaahaha....., i tink all my tutors for the module r all quite nice. To be honest, ever since i left JC, i've never met such "motherly" teachers in NUS until then. All other Full Profs are only interested to publish more papers and gain more fame....Boooo
i totally agree! don't feel the "teacherly" love from those professors.
oops... the last post is from me.
Hello,
I chanced upon your blog when i goggled about Prof Chung. I'm a current undergrad in NUS. Just thought if you could share some experiences about choosing your career path? how did you landed up in your current position and so fore?
