IHG Softball
Today went to school for inter hall games (softball) in the afternoon. Initially was quite worried that heavy rain would spoil the day, but luckily, heaven was still pretty nice, only to deliver light showers. I din get to play, since i din stay in hostels. So, i agreed to help to umpire the semis and final. Felt quite sad that we did not even manage to get another umpire from our own grp of IVP non IHG players and that we need to turn to outsiders for help.
This was the 1st time i umpire slow pitch softball games, so before that i did dig out my ISF rulebook to refresh my memory on the rules of the game, more importantly hoping that by knowing the rules better, i can prevent disputes among the rival teams better. But in the end, wat can go wrong will alwiz go wrong. Disputes still occured over some issues that were not fully tied down before the games.
So, i do learn some valuable lessons from today's experiences.
- importance of adaquate preparation work in everything we do
- importance of communication, especially on debatable rules when arguments cropped up.
- integrity and honesty, when players can lie on the field in an attempt to protect their team interest
- it's hard to be a fair judge too. initially i was very lenient with the pitchers and i usually closed 1 eye even if they had made illegal pitches, but as i went further, i do realised that i need to enforce the regulation.
